An Apple(d) Affair
Oh, the sweet, juicy apples sitting in my refrigerator! They were practically begging me, “Cook with us! Make us a star!” And so, I did. I decided to make Fried Apple Pies. Ah, the joy of turning these humble apples into something so decadent!
The Apple Baptism
So, the first step was to give our apples a nice little bath. I combined 4 cups of peeled and sliced apples with 4 cups of water in a saucepan. It felt like a little hot tub party for the apples. They simmered until they were tender, basically like they had been in a spa all day. They had to cool off after their hot bath, of course.
Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice
Next, it was time for a makeover. I mashed those apples and stirred in 1/2 cup of sugar and 4 teaspoons of cinnamon. The apples, now resembling a Hollywood star after makeup, had to chill out in the fridge, probably texting their friends about their fabulous new look.
The Dough Formation
While the apples were chilling, it was time to get down and dirty with the dough. I combined 6 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of baking powder. Then, I cut in 1 1/2 cups of vegetable shortening until it was well blended. It was like giving a massage to the dough, except I didn’t get one in return. Rude.
The Milk Shower
I then added 1 cup of milk, but not all at once. It was like a slow drizzle, making the dough just the right kind of sticky. After the milk shower, the dough had to chill for 1 hour. I guess it was shy and needed some alone time.
The Great Assembly
The dough and apples were finally ready for their big moment. I rolled out the dough to 1/4 inch thick and cut it into 4-inch rounds. It felt like I was preparing mini wrestling rings for the apples. Each of those rounds got about 2 tablespoons of the apple filling in the center. Then, like a mother tucking her child into bed, I moistened the edges with water and folded the pastry in half, pressing the edges together.
The Hot Oil Splash
The final act was to fry these pies. I heated 2 cups of vegetable oil to 370° and let the pies dive into the hot oil, like a summer pool party. They fried until they turned a beautiful golden brown. It was like watching a sunset, but with a much better smell.
The Grand Finale
And there you have it, Fried Apple Pies that would make any apple proud. The process was a mix of a spa day, a makeover, a wrestling match, and a wild pool party. Cooking is a lot like life, isn’t it? Full of fun, mess, and delicious results. So, go ahead, treat your apples (and yourself) to this fabulous culinary party.
