Easy Chicken And Dumplings: Comfort Food At Its Best

AlessaAlessa—January 28, 20250

There’s nothing quite like the comfort of homemade Chicken and Dumplings. This dish, deeply rooted in Southern cooking, brings back memories of family gatherings, where love was cooked into every bite. It’s a recipe that’s been passed down through generations, a symbol of home and warmth. Making Chicken and Dumplings is like wrapping yourself in a cozy blanket on a chilly day—comforting, satisfying, and heartwarming. The tender chicken, the fluffy dumplings, the savory broth—it all comes together to create a symphony of flavors that’s simply irresistible. What I love most about this recipe is its simplicity. With just a few ingredients and straightforward steps, you can whip up a dish that’s sure to impress your family and friends. Plus, it’s a great way to use up leftover chicken! So why not bring a taste of the South to your dinner table tonight? Trust me, once you’ve tried this Chicken and Dumplings recipe, you’ll be making it again and again!

Ingredients

  • 1 chicken, cooked and cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 stick margarine or butter
  • 2 c. chicken broth
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 can chicken soup
  • 1 c. self-rising flour
  • salt and pepper to taste

Baking Instructions

  1. Layer chicken in bottom of casserole dish and pour melted butter or margarine over chicken.
  2. Next, mix flour with milk and pour over chicken.
  3. Mix soup and broth and pour over top of casserole and gently stir across top; smooth out.
  4. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes or until golden brown and done in center.

The Chronicles of the Chicken Casserole

Ah, Chicken and Dumplings! The ultimate comfort food. The mere mention of this dish makes your taste buds tingle, doesn’t it? If you’re anything like me, a simpleton who loves to eat but is usually too lazy to whip up something fancy, this recipe will be a game changer.

Chicken Prep: Not for the Faint-Hearted

First things first, we need to address the chicken. You need one whole chicken, cooked and cut into small pieces. Now, I’m not going to sugarcoat it, handling chicken can be quite a fowl business (pun intended). But hey, the sweet taste of victory (and chicken) is worth it. Once your chicken is cooked and cut, layer it lovingly at the bottom of your casserole dish.

Butter Shenanigans

Then comes the butter, or margarine if you’re feeling rebellious. Melt a quarter stick of it and pour it over the chicken like a butter waterfall. Take a moment to admire your handiwork. There’s something strangely satisfying about watching melted butter cascading over chicken pieces. It’s like a cheesy romance novel, but with poultry.

The Milk-Flour Tango

Next up, the milk and flour dance. Mix 1 cup of self-rising flour with another cup of milk. This step is a bit like a high-stakes chemistry experiment, except the worst outcome is lumpy flour and not an explosion. Pour this concoction over the chicken. At this point, your casserole will resemble a modern art piece. Not the most appetizing sight, I’ll admit.

Broth & Soup: A Match Made in Heaven

Now, for the pièce de résistance, the chicken soup and chicken broth. Mix 2 cups of broth with a can of chicken soup. This combination is like a celebrity power couple, think Brangelina, but with more flavor and less drama. Pour this over the top of the casserole. Add some salt and pepper to taste. Remember, you can always add more, but you can never take it back, so go easy, my friend!

Bake it till You Make it

Bake your masterpiece at 350° for about 45 minutes or until it’s golden brown and done in the center. This waiting period can feel like an eternity, especially when the heavenly aroma wafts through your kitchen. Resist the urge to open the oven door every 5 minutes. Patience, young grasshopper!

The Final Reveal

Finally, the moment of truth. When the timer dings, brace yourself for the grand reveal. Behold your creation: a scrumptious Chicken and Dumplings casserole. If it doesn’t look like something out of a gourmet cookbook, don’t panic. Remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or in this case, the eater.

And there you have it, folks! Easy Chicken and Dumplings, made from scratch. Trust me, the satisfaction of pulling this off is worth every bit of the chicken deboning, butter melting, and flour mixing. Happy cooking!
