The “Roll”er Coaster of Baking
Hey, there! Last night I decided to take a leap of faith and try my hand at baking rolls. Yes, you heard it right! Rolls! Not the kind you acquire from sitting on the couch all day, but the doughy, fluffy kind you can slather with butter and jam!
The Gathering of Ingredients
It all started with me rummaging through my fridge and cabinets. I managed to find 1 c. milk, 1 stick butter, 1 yeast cake (I swear I didn’t know I had one), and it took me a good 15 minutes to find where I’d stashed my sugar and salt. I mean, who knew 1/3 c. sugar and 1 tsp. salt could play such an awesome game of hide and seek in my own kitchen.
The Mixing Bowl Madness
With ingredients in hand, I scalded the milk with butter, trying not to squeal as the bubbles started to dance around in the pot. I poured this concoction into a large mixing bowl, added sugar and salt, and let it cool. The waiting game was a bit like watching paint dry, but hey, patience and all that jazz, right?
Once it cooled, I threw in 2 eggs (unbeaten, because who wants to beat up innocent eggs), the yeast cake, and 1 1/2 cups of flour. And then the real fun began. I mixed it well for two minutes, adding the remaining flour as I went along. It was like watching a mini-tornado in my bowl, and I swear it was trying to communicate with me in Morse code.
The Icebox Incident
Now, the recipe said to put the dough in the icebox and let it rise overnight. My icebox, however, was already hosting a party of leftovers, condiments, and a few questionable Tupperwares. So, after playing a real-life game of Tetris, I finally managed to make room for my dough baby to rest and rise.
The Morning After
The next morning, I woke up earlier than the sun (so unnatural) to check on my creation. It had risen! It was like welcoming my firstborn into the world, except it was dough, and I was going to bake it.
I punched down the dough (after apologizing to it first), formed the rolls, and let them sit for two hours before cooking. This was the longest two hours of my life, I swear. I watched two episodes of my favorite show, cleaned my kitchen, and even contemplated organizing my sock drawer.
The Final Showdown
Finally, the moment of truth arrived. I slid the tray into the oven with a silent prayer and waited. The smell that wafted out of the oven was heavenly. Pure, buttery, yeasty heaven.
I pulled out the golden-brown rolls with a sense of accomplishment. I mean, I had made these! From scratch! With my own two hands!
So, there you have it, my roller coaster of a journey into the world of baking rolls. It was filled with suspense, drama, and a whole lot of flour. If I can do it, you definitely can. Just remember, the yeast is your friend, and your icebox is your secret weapon!
