How to Make Perfect Pancakes from Scratch

AlessaAlessa—March 6, 20250

There’s something incredibly comforting about a stack of fluffy, golden pancakes. The aroma that fills the kitchen as they cook, the way they soak up just the right amount of syrup, and the smiles on the faces of your loved ones as they tuck into a plate full of this breakfast classic. Pancakes have been a staple of breakfast tables for centuries, with variations existing in almost every culture around the world. The version we’re most familiar with, the fluffy, sweet kind often served with butter and syrup, originated in America. What I love most about pancakes is their simplicity. With just a few basic ingredients – flour, egg, buttermilk, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and a pinch of salt – you can whip up a batch of pancakes that are light, fluffy, and delicious. And the best part? They’re extremely versatile. You can customize your pancakes with a variety of add-ins, like blueberries, chocolate chips, or nuts, to suit your taste. In this post, I’ll be sharing my go-to pancake recipe. It’s foolproof, easy, and results in the most delicious pancakes you’ll ever taste.

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1 c. all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp. oil
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Cooking Method

  1. Beat egg until fluffy
  2. Beat in remaining ingredients until smooth
  3. For thinner pancakes, add 1/4 cup milk
  4. Cook on griddle or skillet until golden brown
  5. Makes about 9 pancakes

Prelude to Pancake Proliferation

There I was, standing in the kitchen, on a quest to create the perfect pancake. I had all my weapons ready: an egg, flour, oil, buttermilk, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. There’s something magical about taking such ordinary ingredients and transforming them into something extraordinary. I mean, who knew that an egg, the epitome of breakfast simplicity, could be the star of such a culinary spectacle?

Egg Beating Extravaganza

The first step was to beat the egg until it was fluffy. Now, the concept of a fluffy egg is a bit perplexing. I mean, isn’t that like asking a rock to float or a cat to bark? But low and behold, after a few minutes of aggressive whisking, my egg was indeed fluffy. It was a proud moment. I had defied the laws of nature and created a fluffy egg. Take that, Newton!

Stirring in the Remainders

The next step was to beat in the remaining ingredients until smooth. This is where the flour, oil, buttermilk, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt came into play. It was like inviting all the neighborhood kids to a pool party. Everybody in the pool! Or in this case, the mixing bowl. And let me tell you, it was a wild party. There was flour flying, buttermilk splashing, and at one point, I’m pretty sure I saw a sugar granule do a backflip. Talk about a sweet move!

Thinner Pancake Paradigm

The recipe then suggested that for thinner pancakes, I could add 1/4 cup of milk. Now, I’m all for body positivity, so I decided to let my pancakes live their best life, thick or thin. But for the sake of culinary exploration, I added the milk. Let’s just say, my pancakes went from sumo wrestler to runway model in a matter of seconds.

The Griddle Games

Finally, it was time to cook these bad boys on the griddle until golden brown. I have to admit, the anticipation was killing me. It was like waiting for your favorite band to come on stage. And when that first pancake hit the griddle, let me tell you, it was music to my ears. The sizzle, the pop, the aroma of pancake perfection filling the air. I was the conductor of my own delicious symphony.

Pancake Prosperity

In the end, I had about nine pancakes. Now, I’m no mathematician, but that’s a lot of pancakes for one person. But no worries, I’m a professional. I took a deep breath, grabbed my fork, and dove in. And oh boy, was it worth it. Each bite was a fluffy, golden, slightly salty, slightly sweet piece of heaven.

So there you have it, my friends. My journey to pancake prosperity. It was a wild ride, full of fluffy eggs, backflipping sugar granules, and pancake symphonies. But in the end, it was all worth it. Because, as they say, the proof is in the pancake.
