How to Bake a Delicious Texas Prize Cake

AlessaAlessa—March 5, 20250

If you’re like me, you believe that there’s always room for dessert, especially when that dessert is a decadent Texas Prize Cake. This cake has been a staple in Southern households for generations, often baked for special occasions or as a delightful treat on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It’s rich, buttery, and absolutely delicious. With this recipe, I aim to bring a piece of Southern comfort right into your kitchen. The Texas Prize Cake is known for its simplicity yet remarkable flavor. Its origins can be traced back to the kitchens of Texas homemakers who believed in the joy of sharing homemade desserts with loved ones. The cake’s name, ‘prize’, is a testament to its winning taste and texture. But don’t be fooled by its simplicity! The perfect Texas Prize Cake requires attention to detail and a lot of love. In this post, I’ll share with you my favourite tips for achieving a moist, tender crumb and a beautiful golden crust. And trust me, once you’ve had a taste, you’ll understand why this cake holds such a special place in my heart.

Ingredients

  • 4 sticks butter
  • 2 2/3 c. sugar
  • 9 eggs
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1 Tbsp. flavoring (vanilla or lemon)

Baking Instructions

  1. Grease and flour bottom of 10-inch tube pan.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar.
  3. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each.
  4. Sift flour and add to creamed mixture.
  5. Add vanilla.
  6. Pour in pan. Bake at 325° for 1 hour or until done.
  7. Cool in pan 5 minutes.

The Epic Quest To Conquer The Texas Prize Cake

Before you start judging, let me clarify – I’m not a professional pastry chef. I’m just a regular human being who likes a challenge. And boy, was preparing the Texas Prize Cake a challenge!

Battle of the Butter and Sugar

The recipe called for four sticks of butter and a whopping 2 2/3 cups of sugar. My arteries screamed out in shock and my scales cowered in fear. But, in the end, I decided that this is a cake, not a salad. So, I committed a sweet, sweet sin and creamed the butter and sugar together. It felt like mixing clouds and sunshine – a beautiful, fatty sunshine.

The Egg-stravaganza

Next up were the eggs – all nine of them. I felt like a hen on overtime. As I added each egg, I imagined I was a contestant on a bizarre game show, “Beat the Egg!” Each golden yolk disappeared into the creamy butter-sugar mix, creating a magical concoction that I hoped was as edible as it was pretty.

Flour Power

The next step was the flour. Three cups of it. Sifting it felt like a snowfall in my kitchen, only less fun to clean up afterwards. As I added it to the creamed mixture, I prayed to all the kitchen gods that I wouldn’t end up with a doughy disaster.

Vanilla Vortex

With the solids all mixed in, it was time for the flavoring. I opted for vanilla because, well, I like to keep things vanilla. One tablespoon of the stuff was all it took to take this cake mix from “meh” to “magnificent”.

Into the Oven

Greasing and flouring the bottom of my 10-inch tube pan felt like I was preparing a luxurious spa for my cake mix. Once it was all ready, I poured in the mix, said a little prayer, and popped it into the oven. The next hour was a nerve-wracking waiting game. I watched the oven like a hawk, hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.

The Final Hoopla

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, my Texas Prize Cake was done. A beautiful, golden brown monument to my culinary prowess (and patience). I let it cool in the pan for five minutes, which was probably the longest five minutes of my life.

The Verdict

The end result? A delicious, buttery, sweet confection that was worth every minute and every calorie. My Texas Prize Cake was a hit, and I basked in the glory of my victory. This wasn’t just a cake, it was my cake. My prize.

So, there you have it, folks. My journey towards creating the Texas Prize Cake. It was an epic quest filled with butter, sugar, eggs, flour, and vanilla. A quest that taught me the value of patience, perseverance, and the power of a good recipe. And remember, if I can do it, so can you!
