Hominy Casserole: A Southern Classic

AlessaAlessa—March 3, 20250

I’ve always been a huge fan of Southern cuisine, and one dish that never fails to bring me comfort is the Hominy Casserole. Originating from the Southern United States, this dish is a delightful blend of hominy, creamy mushroom soup, spicy Cheez Whiz, all topped off with a satisfying crunch of Fritos. The fusion of these flavors creates a casserole that’s hearty, comforting, and perfect for those chillier nights. Hominy, made by drying and treating corn kernels, is a staple in Southern cooking, and its unique texture is something I absolutely adore. The richness of the mushroom soup, combined with the spicy kick from the Cheez Whiz, complements the hominy beautifully. And let’s not forget the Fritos! Their crunchy texture adds that final touch, making this dish a true Southern classic. I love this recipe not only for its taste but also for its simplicity. The ingredients are easy to find, and the cooking process is straightforward, making it the perfect recipe for both beginner and experienced home cooks. So, why not bring a taste of the South to your kitchen with this Hominy Casserole recipe? I promise, you won’t be disappointed!

Ingredients

  • 2 cans yellow hominy, drained
  • 1/2 stick oleo
  • 1/2 large onion
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 small jar hot Cheez Whiz (jalapeno Whiz)
  • some Fritos

Baking Instructions

  1. Butter dish; cook onion in oleo.
  2. Add soup, hominy and Cheez Whiz.
  3. Pour into buttered dish; crush Fritos to top the casserole. Cook at 350° until it bubbles, about 35 to 45 minutes.

The Hominy Hustle

Welcome, dear readers, to another fun-filled foray into the world of culinary exploration! Today, we’re diving into the warm, comforting embrace of a Hominy Casserole. Yes, you heard it right! We’re dancing with two cans of yellow hominy, a half stick of oleo, and a large onion that’s been chopped in half and left to ponder its life choices.

The Unlikely Fellowship of Ingredients

Our journey begins with a buttered dish, the oleo and half an onion. Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Oleo? Isn’t that what my grandma used?” Yes, my friend, but don’t underestimate the power of the old school. These three ingredients are the unlikely fellowship that will lay the foundation for our Hominy Casserole – a dish so comforting, it’s like a bear hug from a friendly denizen of the culinary world.

The Saute Saga

First, we sauté the onion in oleo. This process turns the onion translucent, its tears of joy releasing a tantalizing aroma that says, “I’m ready for my transformation!” It’s like watching a culinary superhero saga, but instead of spandex, our heroes are sporting glossy coats of oleo.

The Creamy Concoction

Next up, we add a can of cream of mushroom soup into the mix. Now, don’t let the can fool you, this isn’t just soup, it’s a velvet cloak ready to wrap our yellow hominy in its creamy embrace. And to spice things up a bit, we’re throwing in a small jar of hot Cheez Whiz (preferably jalapeno Whiz, if you want that extra kick). Beware, as the sizzling sound it makes when it hits the pan, might just make you break into an impromptu salsa dance.

The Hominy Huddle

Once we’ve got our creamy concoction going, it’s time to introduce our yellow hominy to the party. Hominy is corn’s cooler cousin, the one who went on a gap year and came back with a whole new look and a taste for adventure. As the hominy simmers in the creamy, cheesy sauce, it absorbs that rich flavor, creating a texture and taste that’s a carnival in your mouth.

The Frito Finale

Then comes the pièce de résistance – Fritos. We crush them into rebellious little bits and sprinkle them on top of our casserole like confetti at a food festival. The crunch of the Fritos provides a perfect contrast to the tender hominy, creating a symphony of textures that’ll have your taste buds doing the cha-cha-cha.

The Oven Odyssey

Finally, we pop our masterpiece into the oven and cook it at 350° until it bubbles, about 35 to 45 minutes. Watching it bubble is like watching a food volcano, except instead of running away, you’re running towards it with a fork and a napkin tucked into your shirt.

And there you have it, folks! The Hominy Casserole – a dish so full of flavor, it’s like a rollercoaster ride for your palate. So grab your aprons, and let’s cook up some fun! Remember, the kitchen is not just a room, it’s a sanctuary where magic happens, and today, the magic is all about the Hominy Casserole.
