How to Make Fluffy White Icing at Home

If there’s one thing that can elevate any cake or cupcake from good to great, it’s undoubtedly the icing. Today, I am thrilled to share with you my go-to recipe for homemade fluffy white icing. This icing, my dear readers, is a game-changer. It’s the epitome of fluffy, creamy perfection that can make any baked good taste like a professionally made dessert. Originating from traditional American baking, fluffy white icing, also known as seven-minute frosting, has been a staple in many households for generations. Its simplicity, along with its delightful taste and texture, has made it a popular choice for many baking enthusiasts like myself. The best part? It’s incredibly easy to make with just a few basic ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. With a little bit of patience and the right technique, you can whip up this cloud-like frosting in no time. Why do I love it so much? Well, aside from its mouthwatering taste, I adore this recipe because it’s versatile. You can use it to frost cakes, fill pastries, or even top off your favourite hot beverages. Plus, it’s a fun and satisfying process. There’s something oddly therapeutic about watching simple ingredients transform into a bowl of pure, snowy-white bliss. So, are you ready to take your baking game to the next level? Let’s get started!

Ingredients

  • 2 c. 10x sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 1 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 Tbsp. milk

Baking Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together, except milk.
  2. Beat at high speed; slowly add milk.

Total cooking time: 10 minutes

Difficulty level: Easy

The Sweet Tale of the Fluffiest White Icing

Ah, the trials and tribulations of making fluffy white icing. It’s a story as old as time itself. Well, not really, but it’s a story as old as my grandma’s recipe box.

The Ingredients: A Comedy of Errors

First things first, gather your ingredients. We’re going to need 2 c. 10x sugar, 2 Tbsp. flour, 1 egg white, 1/2 c. Crisco, 1 Tbsp. butter, 1 tsp. vanilla, and 2 Tbsp. milk. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, not when you’re me.

I had everything but the sugar. You’d think as a food blogger I’d have my kitchen stocked to the brim with all types of sugar. But, alas, I only had the regular granulated kind. So, off I went to the store, only to discover they were out of 10x sugar. I mean, who buys out an entire store’s supply of 10x sugar?

The Great Sugar Hunt

After visiting three more stores, and considering a fourth, I finally found it. Nestled in between the brown sugar and the powdered sugar was my 10x sugar. Back home, I heaved a sigh of relief, and a little chuckle, realizing that I had just gone on a wild goose chase for sugar.

The Mixing Mayhem

With my hard-earned sugar finally in tow, it was time to start the magic. I threw all the ingredients into a bowl, except the milk, and started mixing. And let me tell you, flour and Crisco can create a cloud of dust that makes it look like a winter wonderland in your kitchen. If you ever want to experience a white Christmas in July, just whip up a batch of this icing.

The High-Speed Hysteria

Once the initial dust storm settled, it was time to crank up the mixer to high speed. Now, I thought I had seen it all with the flour and Crisco, but when you add an egg white to the mix and beat it at high speed, you’re in for a real treat. I’m talking about a fluffy, white, sticky mess that somehow managed to find its way onto my ceiling, my hair, and even my dog!

The Milky Way

After the fluff storm passed, it was time to slowly add the milk. Now, “slowly” is the keyword here. I thought I was being careful, but apparently, my mixer had other plans. It decided to throw a milk party and invited everyone, including my countertops and floor.

The Vanilla Victory

Finally, it was time to add the vanilla. By this point, I was covered in icing, my kitchen looked like a bakery explosion, and I was laughing so hard my sides hurt. But, as I added that sweet, sweet vanilla and watched it blend into the fluffy white cloud of sugar, flour, Crisco, and butter, I knew it was all worth it.

The Final Product: A Triumph

In the end, despite the sugar hunt, the flour clouds, the egg white fluff storm, the milk party, and the vanilla victory, I ended up with the fluffiest, most delicious white icing I’ve ever tasted. And, I had a hilarious story to share with my friends, family, and all of you lovely readers.

So, remember, cooking isn’t just about the final product. It’s about the joy, the laughter, the mess, and the memories you make along the way. And, sometimes, it’s about the great sugar hunt and the high-speed egg white fluff storm.
